Federal Student Loan Discharge

Requirements if you have been approved for a Federal Student Loan Discharge

You can go back to school and receive new Direct Loans or TEACH Grant after getting a TPD discharge. But to do so, you must provide the following documents to the Office of Financial Aid:

  1. Disability Discharge - Doctor Statement - confirmation from your doctor that you are once again able to engage in substantial gainful activity AND;

  2. Disability Discharge - Student Statement - acknowledging that you can't get a Total/Permanent Disability discharge of the new loan or TEACH Grant based on a disabling condition you already have unless that condition significantly deteriorates in the future.

If you’re in a monitoring period for your discharge when you borrow a new Direct Loan or TEACH Grant, you will lose your discharge status and your loan or TEACH grant obligation will be reinstated.

Please submit both documents to finaid@howard.edu for review and processing.

NOTE: If you have applied for or are in the process of applying for a TPD discharge, but the application has neither been approved nor rejected, any disbursements of a Federal Student loan or TEACH Grant that are made may cause your application for TPD discharge to be suspended until the disbursement is returned or may cause your discharge application to be rejected.
